Lydia Alhassan, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, has instructed the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to deploy water tankers to several Accra communities facing severe water shortages. The directive comes in the wake of a major pipe burst in Dodowa, which has disrupted the water supply to multiple areas.
During her visit to the site of the burst, Minister Alhassan expressed strong disapproval of the GWCL’s failure to communicate effectively with the public about the crisis. She demanded that the company provide clear explanations for the ongoing water shortages and ensure temporary water supplies are delivered to the affected communities while repairs are underway.
The GWCL has assured the minister that the issue will be resolved within 24 hours. Additionally, Minister Alhassan announced that nationwide measures will be implemented to ensure a continuous water supply.
Residents in several eastern suburbs of Accra, including Madina, Adenta, and Dodowa, have been without water for nearly a week. Many took to social media to express their frustration, criticizing the GWCL for its lack of communication and the prolonged disruption. The water outage, which began on Sunday, August 25, 2024, has left residents feeling neglected and desperate for answers.
