John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to uphold its integrity to prevent potential unrest in the upcoming December elections. Speaking at a recent event, Mahama expressed disappointment with the EC’s recently concluded Voters’ Exhibition Exercise, which was meant to allow voters to verify their details, challenge inaccuracies, and locate their polling stations.
Mahama alleged that the exercise was poorly managed and marred by irregularities, including instances where voters could not find their names on the register or had their details altered without their consent. He warned that the EC’s handling of the process could undermine the credibility of the elections and jeopardize the country’s democracy.
“The Electoral Commission opened the register for people to inspect their names, but I’m sorry to say there is a lot wrong with that register. The EC must take corrective action to avoid confusion on election day. The EC is crucial to ensuring peaceful elections in this country, so if the EC is listening, you better wake up,” Mahama asserted.
He emphasized that the success of the upcoming general election hinges on the EC’s professionalism and credibility and urged the Commission to rectify any issues that could impact the election’s fairness.
“You are not doing your jobs properly. Many people cannot find their names, others have had their names transferred without their knowledge. There are cases of people registering for proxy voting without using their biometric cards, and instances of multiple registrations still appearing on the register,” Mahama added.
