Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has announced plans to allow experienced nurses and physician assistants will be allowed to train to be doctors.
The Health Minister noted that the new policy will allow experienced physician assistants and nurses who have served for a number of years to pursue medical education to be trained to be doctors.
He asserted that the move is to expand healthcare access and improve medical service delivery.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stated, “In Ghana, previously, until this year, if you were a nurse for so many years, you could never become a doctor. If you are a physician assistant, you can do it thousand years you could not become a medical doctor. We are going to cancel that.
What we are bringing is that if you are a nurse, a physician assistant, and you have worked for some number of years, so will be allowed to learn medicine to become a medical doctor”.
Some Ghanaians have shared their opinions by saying, “ Positive, however, the NDC made many promises during their campaign and failed to fulfil them upon returning to office, particularly regarding the ban on illegal mining (galamsey). How can we trust them on this issue?”
“But Graduate Entrance Medicine is not anything new. Any science-related student after their undergrad can become a doctor”, another stated.
Another Ghanaian stated, “Herrrr I now believe what you say about this Man. What he said is never true.
He was informed about the issue but I think he failed to do more research to understand the problem on the ground. The issue is about how corrupt the GRADUATE ENTRY PROGRAM IS. That needs to be addressed”.
Additionally, a netizen added, “This isn’t a new phenomenon. Practically all health professionals can train, with the avenue to med school to become medical doctors. Smh. I guess the settings and propaganda machinery are at work”.
“Nurses have always been able to switch to medicine and not “untill this year” as he mentions. Even so, it’s a career change not a nursing upgrade. The minister wrongly presents it as such, showing a lack of understanding likely because he isn’t a health professional”, another netizen added.
