Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications has revealed that the government satellite television subscription ban at the Jubilee House saves the presidency GH₵120,000 every month.
President John Dramani Mahama placed a ban on the use of DSTV and other satellite television subscriptions at the Jubilee House.
According to reports, plans are underway to extend the embargo to all government agencies.
The Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Ofosu Kwakye revealed this in an interview with JoyNews.
He stated that no office at the president is now permitted to have a pay-TV subscription.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye stated, “I can reveal to you that if you come to this house, there’s no office in this house that is allowed to subscribe to DSTV or any satellite television”.
“You would say that that is a trivial matter, but he has done that. Because when you computed the cost, it was significant money”.
He added, “You can turn on the television that you see here, you will find that I’m only limited to local television stations. It is something that will be extended to all government agencies to ensure that we don’t waste the taxpayers’ money.”
“This is a man deeply committed to making savings for the Ghanaian people. Governance necessarily involves taking tough decisions… but the citizenry must see corresponding levels of modesty on the part of government officials—and that’s what President Mahama is committed to doing,” he said.
Speaking in an recent interview with GBC Ofosu Kwakye stated, “When we came to the Jubilee House, there were multiple subscriptions in addition to the local channels that we watched. When we took stock and did the calculations, we realised we were spending about GH₵120,000 monthly just on satellite subscriptions. President Mahama has cancelled all of that,” he disclosed.
“There are communities where a broken water pump costing GH₵1,000 is all that stands between them and access to clean water. Yet, here we were spending GH₵120,000 just to watch TV,” he added.
