President John Dramani Mahama has placed a ban on the use of DSTV and other satellite television subscriptions at the Jubilee House.
According to reports, plans are underway to extend the embargo to all government agencies.
The Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Ofosu Kwakye revealed this in an interview with JoyNews.
He stated that no office at the president is now permitted to have a pay-TV subscription.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye stated, “I can reveal to you that if you come to this house, there’s no office in this house that is allowed to subscribe to DSTV or any satellite television”.
“You would say that that is a trivial matter, but he has done that. Because when you computed the cost, it was significant money”.
He added, “You can turn on the television that you see here, you will find that I’m only limited to local television stations. It is something that will be extended to all government agencies to ensure that we don’t waste the taxpayers’ money.”
“This is a man deeply committed to making savings for the Ghanaian people. Governance necessarily involves taking tough decisions… but the citizenry must see corresponding levels of modesty on the part of government officials—and that’s what President Mahama is committed to doing,” he said.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the news by saying, “Akufo-Addo tenure, they used to spend close to Ghc2Million on DSTV Premium subscriptions. This is a good step. MAHAMA means business this time”.
“This is a good move John Mahama is doing well .. he must extend it to all government institutions including hospitals, schools etc”, another netizen stated.
One more netizen wrote, “This is a bold and commendable move by President Mahama! Banning DSTV and satellite TV subscriptions at Jubilee House and planning to extend it to all government agencies shows a strong commitment to cutting unnecessary costs and prioritizing national interest.
It’s a clear message that leadership starts with leading by example. Redirecting these funds toward essential public services or local initiatives could have a meaningful impact. A step in the right direction for responsible governance!”.
Additionally, another Ghanaian wrote, “ The question here is, is the government using the taxpayers’ money to pay for this DSTV subscriptions, If yes then the ban is the right thing to do, we can’t keep paying subscriptions for government agencies and appointees”.
