According to NPP’s Justin Frimpong Kodua, the plot to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo is linked to an alleged plot by the NDC to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.

He claimed that the argument revolves around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.

Justin Frimpong Kodua noted that some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution in a way that implies the two-term limit applies only to two successive terms.

Speaking on Metro TV Good Morning Ghana, Kwesi Pratt stated, “Before we started you played a clip of the General Secretary of the party who is a lawyer and other leaders of the party in the clip what are they saying?

Their main concern is that if the constitutional process which has started is allowed to conclude President Mahama will declare his wish for a third term. We all heard it”.

He continued, “Yesterday I was on a platform with your chief spokesman Mr Ahiabah who stated clearly the NPP is not worried about the law of the constitution. If you follow the law it is difficult to find fault with what the president is doing this are your own statement made by your General Secretary and made by your chief communicator and your leaders.

They are saying this is not a matter of law or the Constitution it is about politics and some they believe that President Mahama may declare a third term, why are you wasting our time? Why are you in court when you agree this is not a constitutional matter?”

He further added, “Who told you the president intends to run for a third term, where did you get that information? What is your basis for assuming or even dreaming that one day President Mahama? So give me the basis.

You asked to demonstrate because you think you imagine that one day President Mahama will declare for a third term that is the basis for asking as to go for the demonstration”.

Dr Kingsley Nyarko also speaking stated, “For some time I have been thinking about the possibility of it being done by him, even before he won the presidency because of Article 62 (2) that I felt that the Supreme Court at a point might be called upon interpret it. It is not a dream.

We were in this country where were supposed to go to the IMF President Mahama said that we were not going to the IMF the next day we went, I am saying that some people have argued that looking at Article 62 (2) some people think that it might need interpretation is it two terms consecutively or two terms apart.

So if people are thinking about this constitutional provision you don’t say that they are dreaming. The demonstration is about the removal of the CJ and the onslaught on the judiciary”.

Meanwhile, Manasseh Azure Awuni an award-winning investigative journalist has waded into allegations levelled against President John Dramani Mahama of plotting for a third term by some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Manasseh Azure, President John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third.

In a short post on his social media page on X, he wrote, “I think John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third term”.
