Police nabs suspect in the murder of UEW lecturer

Joshua Karry Arthur a suspect in the murder of University of Education, Winneba (UEW) lecturer Prof. Amedeka Mawuedem Koku has been arrested.

The UEW lecturer Prof. Amedeka Mawuedem Koku was found buried at his residence at Essuokyir in the Central Region after being reported missing on May 21.

The Police confirmed that several items recovered from the suspect belonged to the deceased lecturer including two Samsung phones, a laptop, a 50-inch television, and a Toyota Fortuner car key which are critical evidence in the ongoing investigation.

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, in a press release by the Police, they revealed that the suspect, Joshua Karry Arthur, was apprehended on the same day, May 22, 2025, at the deceased’s residence in Essuokyir, Winneba.

The statement reads, “The deceased lecturer had been reported missing on 21st May, 2025, by his colleagues, who had indicated to Police that all efforts to reach him had yielded no response. Police proceeded to the residence of the deceased, where the suspect was found and arrested”.

“Police also discovered some blood stains, which were traced to a heap of sand about 23 meters from the house. Upon clearing the sand, a body believed to be that of the missing lecturer was found buried. The body was recovered and deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Chapter, has called for justice for Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedeker.

In a press release dated May 25, 2025, signed by UTAG-UEW President Stephen Osei Akyiaw and Secretary Dr. Bernard Tutu-Boahene UTAG-UEW expressed profound sorrow and shock, “This heartbreaking incident has shaken not only the UEW academic community but the entire nation”.

“This is not only a matter of accountability but also a crucial affirmation of the safety and sanctity of our academic institutions,” the release stressed.
