The Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi has told Adum market fire victims not to waste money and cement in reconstructing the market.
According to the Kumasi Mayor, he would demolish the structure without proper structural assessment.
He noted concern for public safety, mentioning concerns over the structural integrity of the affected buildings.
His comments come following some donations and cements received by the Adum fire victims from some politicians, and businessmen.
A two-story building housing several shops in the central business district of Adum in Kumasi caught fire some weeks ago.
The fire happened at the popular Blue Light arena, close to Hello FM.
Reports suggest the fire started around 6 am and spread rapidly as fire officers made attempts to contain the blaze.
According to reports some shop owners attempted to defy the ravaging fire to salvage their goods.
It has also been revealed that a shop owner had to be forced out, and at a point, a ladder was needed to evacuate him from danger.
The information available suggests most of the shops deal in mobile phones and accessories, jewellery, and clothing.
An eyewitness account claims the fires started from a touching electricity pole in the area, leading to a sparkle on the top floor of one of the buildings.
Meanwhile, Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister revealed some weeks ago that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the landlord, is currently out of the country, so construction work cannot start.
“Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the landlord, is currently out of the country. Therefore, the rebuilding of the market cannot start now. However, the government will take the necessary steps when he returns in the interest of the affected traders,” he revealed.
