Outspoken media personality, Okatakyie Kwame Afrifa has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being one of the most tribalistic parties in Ghana.
He indicated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which has been tagged us the most tribalistic party in the country vindicated itself when they elected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their Presidential Candidate in the December 7, 2024 elections.
“The NPP has allowed a Northerner lead them so there is no more calling the NPP a tribalistic party. The NPP is not a tribal party. The NPP has been accused of being tribal because at the time a Northerner had never led the party.”
“If that is the reason then the NDC is also a tribal party as they have never let an Ashanti lead the party ever. It has never happened. Have you seen an Ashanti lead the NDC?”
Okatakyie Afrifa cited the era of the late Jerry John Rawlings as one of the prominent times the NDC showed its tribal colors. “During the Rawlings era, P.V Obeng was the one managing the affairs of the country. He was brilliant than all of them and they disliked him. But you can’t tell them they are a tribal party. You’re very tribalistic characters. Were being honest with you,” he accused the NDC.
The journalist indicated that the tribal card can only be taken away from Ghanaian politics when the NDC stops tagging the NPP as a tribalistic party. “If you tag the NPP as tribalistic today, we will tag the NDC as same tomorrow.”
He further addressed the notion that Ashanti’s are tribalistic indicating that the assertion does not hold true.
“The Ashanti’s are always accused of being tribalistic but the Ashanti’s have done nothing to anyone.”
He went down memory lane to tell the audience how he was friends with Northerner named Sulley during his childhood. Okatakyie Afrifa indicated that if Ashanti’s were truly tribalistic, then he would not have befriended Sulley.
