President John Dramani Mahama has sacked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Yesterday Pro-NPP NPP radio station Asaase FM claimed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare has been sacked from his position.
In a post shared by the Asaase radio official page, they boldly declared that the IGP has been sacked, and more details will be followed.
The founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe and the Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil has warned President John Mahama against the potential removal of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
No official reason has been given for Dr Akuffo Dampare’s dismissal, sources suggest the move is part of a broader restructuring effort within the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and the Council of State, made the appointment.
“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.
“He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.
The IGP’s position has been in question by some Ghanaians after the new government took office publicly.
IGP Damapre was appointed as the Inspector General of Police of the Ghana Police Service by President Nana Akufo-Addo on 21 July 2021 effective 1 August 2021.
He is widely celebrated for spearheading key policing reforms, including community engagement initiatives and internal discipline measures within the service.
Meanwhile, Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, has alleged that former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, paid thousands of dollars to two high-ranking officials at Jubilee House in a last-minute attempt to secure his position.
Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana show on March 13, 2025, Adom-Otchere claimed, “So, there is a guy called Listowel who went to Jubilee House and asked why high-profile officials were allegedly receiving presents from Akuffo Dampare just 72 hours before his dismissal.
These presents were reportedly delivered to two top-ranking officials. I won’t mention their names, but two high-profile officials at Jubilee House allegedly received money from Akuffo Dampare just days and hours before his removal as IGP.
Where is Dr Dampare getting the money from? Two high-profile officials at Jubilee House, not Felix Kwakye Ofosu, but two others, have allegedly received thousands of dollars from Dr Akuffo Dampare in an attempt to save his position”, he added.
