The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that 50 out of 150 Ghanaians currently detained in the United States have received final deportation orders and are expected to return to Ghana by mid-2025.
This announcement was made during a briefing to Parliament.
Providing updates from Ghana’s Washington mission, the Minister revealed that the detained individuals face deportation for offenses including rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry.
“Currently, there are 150 Ghanaians in detention across various centres in the US who are awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry”.
He stated that, “of the 150 detainees, 50 have received final deportation orders, while the remaining 100 cases are either under appeal or have been dismissed”.
Ablakwa also noted that three Ghanaians have already been processed for deportation and are scheduled to depart on commercial flights on March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025.
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the rights and dignity of the affected individuals are upheld throughout the deportation process.

The mass deportation exercise began immediately after Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on January 20, 2025.
Trump has vowed to oversee the largest deportation programme in US history and has revealed criminals and gang members will be prioritised in such raids.
