The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Kumasi has extended its working hours to manage the overwhelming number of car owners rushing to register their vehicles for 2025 number plates.
This decision comes amid widespread frustrations over delays caused by challenges with the Authority’s digital registration platform.
Motorists have reported spending up to three to four days completing the registration process, with many citing network issues as the primary cause of the delays.
Some applicants have traveled from distant regions, such as Ahafo, while others have had to leave work behind, losing productive hours.
“We all embrace the digital system, but it seems it is causing some challenges.
I’ve spent three full days trying to register a single car,” one frustrated motorist lamented.
Ashanti Regional Director of the DVLA, Amos Kwabena Abaka, acknowledged the challenges, attributing the delays to network congestion due to the high volume of users on the system.
He assured the public that steps were being taken to resolve the issues.
“When a lot of people get on a certain network, it will definitely be sluggish.
That’s the kind of challenge we are having,” he explained.
In response, DVLA staff now report to work earlier than usual and stay as late as 8 p.m. to address the backlog.
Mr. Abaka expressed optimism that the extended hours would gradually reduce the congestion.
The DVLA is working to enhance its digital platform to ensure a smoother registration process in the future.
This includes addressing bottlenecks and implementing measures to streamline operations.
In December 2024, the Authority introduced a pre-inspection policy for new vehicle owners to begin their registration process early, aiming to reduce congestion at its offices.
Despite the current hurdles, this marks a significant step toward a more efficient and secure vehicle registration system.
