A violent clash between residents and the military has led to 27 persons reportedly dead.

The military personnel were said to be guarding the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine.

The information gathered reveals four vehicles have also been burnt following the clash.

Reports suggest the incident happened last night on January 18, which has heightened tensions.

It remains unclear what ignited the clash between the small-scale miners and the military.

According to an X user identified as Nana Kwame, reports by some media houses as to what caused the explosive incident are being twisted. The underlying causes are clear.

He wrote, “The NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Aboagye, made a promise to their party members that should the party win the 2024 elections, they would give them portions of the lands to undertake galamsey activities.

In fact, that portion of AngloGold Ashanti’s concession was promised to them. All they needed to do was to support the party to come to power”, he wrote.

He further claimed, “As I write, about 27 persons have lost their lives through that forceful takeover of AngloGold concessions. While it is regrettable that these number of people have died through confrontations between the NDC galamseyers and the security guarding the mining sites, it is important to remind Ghanaians what the situation was.

The Mahama administration, before the Akufo-Addo administration came into being, had collapsed the Obuasi mining industry. The mining sites had been collapsed and virtually closed down”, the X user added.

According to him, it took former President Akufo-Addo to work tirelessly to revive and resuscitate the Obuasi mines after NDC, led by Mahama, had collapsed it.

He alleged the NDC were going to take over the mining sites they had run aground leading to the chaos.
