Ghanaian Lawyer and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has unveiled plans of yet another demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey).
The demonstration scheduled for Ghana’s Independence Day, March 6, 2025 will be the first of the ruling John Dramani Mahama administration’s second term.
According to Barker-Vormawor, this demonstration has been necessitated because of ongoing mining activities in the Tano Anwia Forest reserve.
On September 21, 2024, Ghanaian youth embarked on a three-day demonstration against illegal mining.
The demonstration was to bring attention and seek immediate government action on the effects mining activities were having on the nation’s water bodies and demand an immediate ban on all mining activities.
The demonstration organized by Democracy Hub, an advocacy group which Barker-Vormawor is a leader of resulted in over 40 protestors being arrested.
The arrested protestors were charged with destruction of public property, disrupting public order, unlawful assembly and a host of other charges.
