Cecil Nii Obodai Wentum, the acting Director of Public Affairs, at Ghana Highway Authority, has been speaking on the alleged GHS2.75m monthly being pocked a month from one axle load station.
Sam George on TV3’s Key Point show on Saturday, December 14, 2024, detailed that the Ghana Highway Authorities fired a woman for generating GHS3m revenue monthly from an axle load station.
He further revealed, “So, imagine if we had 10 axel load stations across the country and they were making revenue of at least 3 million cedis in one station and they are declaring 250,000 cedis every month some people are sitting back and grinning 2.75 million from one axle station over 10 axle station that will be 27.5 million cedis every month”.
Speaking on the 3FM Sunrise Show, Cecil Nii Obodai Wentum reacted to the allegations by saying, “ We have 22 axle load stations across the country, so he was even mentioning ten, but that is not the kind of figures that come from all the 22 axle load stations and let me make this point very clear, our axle load stations are not revenue generating units of the Ghana Highway Authority”.
“It is a control program, it follows compliance, it is geared towards compliance so the thing is that you get there you are overloaded we will shed off your excess load you pay a fine, and then you continue”, he added.
He further detailed the work of the axle stations, “So to the transporter, it is more expensive to engage in overloading your truck, when you get to all the axle load stations you go through the checkpoint”.
An Axle Load Weigh Station is a point used by supervisors from the GHA to check a truck’s weight to ensure it is not overweight and conforms to state laws and safety guidelines.
