The leader of the NPP caucus in parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has said the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has taken parliament as his personal property.
According to Afenyo-Markins, Speaker Bagbin when it pleases him opens parliament for government businesses.
Afenyo-Markin was reacting to Alban Bagbin’s decision not to reopen parliament until after the 2024 elections.
Bagbin, in a memo to the majority on Tuesday, November 26, noted that “The House will resume sitting after the elections to complete all essential matters before a seamless transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.”
Speaking at a press conference, Afenyo-Markin stated, “The speaker of parliament has taken parliament as his personal property, as and when it pleases him, he opens parliament even when there is an issue that he could sit with as he says no”.
“Look at the recent case, they themselves created this impasse, we as law-abiding citizens took the matter to court the court ruled in our favor they contested and lost, I was expecting Mr. Speaker to immediately open parliament as a democrat to say that government business must go on”, he added.
Afenyo Markins further emphasized, “The flagbearer of the NDC also said the same thing, so what are they doing to hold the government hostage, the one district one factory project program that we needed to approve the tax exemptions was aimed at helping these companies make saving use the savings to expand their businesses the NDC is saying they don’t want it”.
