According to Afenyo-Markins, Speaker Bagbin has taken parliament as his personal property and opens parliament when it pleases him for government businesses to be done.

Afenyo-Markin noted the NDC wrote a counter-petition stating that Mr. Speaker should not open parliament, as well as their flagbearer who stated the NDC MPs will not go back to parliament until after the elections.

Bagbin in a memo to the majority on Tuesday, November 26, noted, “The House will resume sitting after the elections to complete all essential matters before a seamless transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.”

Speaking at a press conference, Afenyo-Markin stated, “I waited upon him he did not, when I finally wrote to him to open parliament for us to do government business look at his response, he is not ready, look at the response of the NDC, they wrote a counter-petition saying that Mr. Speaker should not open parliament”.

“The flagbearer of the NDC also said the same thing, so what are they doing to hold the government hostage, the one district one factory project program that we needed to approve the tax exemptions was aimed at helping these companies make saving use the savings to expand their businesses the NDC is saying they don’t want it”, he stated.

Afenyo-Markin further claimed, saying, “The speaker of parliament has taken parliament as his personal property, as and when it pleases him, he opens parliament even when there is an issue that he could sit with as he says no”.

“Look at the recent case, they themselves created this impasse, we as law-abiding citizens took the matter to court the court ruled in our favor they contested and lost, I was expecting Mr. Speaker to immediately open parliament as a democrat to say that government business must go on”, he reiterated.
