Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia made the announcement on Monday, February 19th, during the launch of the “Tap and Go” digital payment system for the company in Accra.

The Vice President revealed that the government plans to order 100 more electric buses by the end of this year, as part of efforts to integrate e-vehicles into the public transport system.

This is expected to help reduce the carbon footprint and improve the efficiency of transport services in Ghana.

The “Tap and Go” system, which was also launched alongside the electric buses, is designed to eliminate corruption and revenue losses in public transport operations.

The system uses a preloaded digital card, similar to the UK’s Oyster Card, which passengers can tap on a fixed machine to pay their fare. Additionally, a mobile app will offer a virtual card option for easy payment via smartphones.

To further enhance security and monitoring, all electric buses will be equipped with cameras, allowing Metro Mass Transit to monitor activities on board in real time through its control room.
