Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress(NDC), has described the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin as a divine sign pointing to the NDC’s success in the upcoming December 2024 general elections.
The Speaker approved the motion, initiated by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, during a parliamentary sitting on October 17.
The motion argued that the four Members of Parliament (MPs) in question Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central) had forfeited their seats by announcing their intention to contest the 2024 elections as independent candidates.
This decision was based on the premise that such actions violate constitutional provisions governing parliamentary membership.
Addressing party supporters at a rally in Ningo-Prampram, Mr. Mahama described the vacancies as a favorable omen, interpreting the parliamentary development as a reflection of the party’s growing momentum ahead of the elections.
He noted that the shift in parliamentary composition, where three of the affected seats belonged to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and one to the NDC, symbolized a reversal of fortunes for both parties.
Mahama went on to urge supporters to remain focused and dedicated in the months leading to the elections, cautioning that the situation, while promising, was not a guarantee of success.
He emphasized the need for continuous efforts on the ground to secure a decisive victory on December 7.
