One of the 53 democracy hub demonstrators, has shared the horrifying details of how he was extorted just so he could sleep in peace in the police cell.
The demonstrator revealed the first time he had to pay cell fee was when he was sent to the Adenta police station.
“They took me to Adenta police station. When you get to Adenta you have to pay cell fee. So, I paid cell fee. When you get to the police station the leaders there will charge you cell fee. So, they took me like Ghc400 at the Adenta police station,” he told Captain Smart on Onua TV.
After being taken to court for the first time he was transferred to the Nima police station, he complained to the police officers and asked them to take him back to Adenta police station as he had paid for the cell fee over there. His please however went unheard.
Prior to being picked up to Nima, he had not had anything to eat for three (3) days but was finally given some food upon arrival at the Nima police station.
The young man suffered a stomach pain and laid on the floor in pain. He received no help but was rather thrown in a bunker where he had to pay again before he was given a mattress to sleep on.
“I was taken to the bunker. The bunker was a tight space, about 6ft by 8ft and housed over 50 people. It was so hot and everyone was sweating and I was so uncomfortable as my stomach ache worsened. The cell leader asked me to pay Ghc1,200 if I wanted a comfortable place to sleep. So i had to pay the Ghc1,200 before I was given a small mattress to sleep on,” he narrated sadly.
The commander or the Nima police station later came to check on the young man and asked if he had been charged any money but out of fear he denied.
The Ghana Police arrested some 53 Democracy Hub demonstrators and charged them with destruction of public property, obstruction of traffic and public disorder.
Most of these people have however been granted bail awaiting trail.
