The Ministry of Finance has maintained its number one spot as the most fiscally reckless public institution in Ghana from 2021 to 2023.
It was the first from 2015 to 2020.
Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Communication and Digitalization, Roads and Highways, and Health followed in the second, third fourth in that order as most fiscally reckless public institution in a report released by policy think tanks IMANI Africa and Oxfam Ghana.
The report evaluated financial irregularities among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) through the third fiscal recklessness index.
Speaking to the media after the launch of the report’,, a senior research associate at IMANI Africa, Dennis Asare noted that Ghana lost over Ghc 4.9 billion in 2023 due to these financial irregularities.
He added that almost 90% of the irregularities can be traced to the Finance Ministry because they serve as a central management agency with oversight responsibilities for other institutions.”
The irregularities identified, include tax discrepancies, underscoring the government’s ineffective revenue mobilization efforts.
