Broadcast Journalist and host of Johnnie’s Bite on 3FM, Johnnie Beresford Hughes has revealed that nobody in government is talking about the quality of the Free SHS but just the numbers.
According to Johnnie Hughes the government in a few days would add the new form one student to the numbers for political expediency, benefit, and advantage but never talks about the quality of the Free SHS.
Speaking on his program Johnnie’s Bite on 3FM, he said, “I told you a few weeks back that SHS 1 students, we keep talking about free SHS, I told you that we would be adding the new numbers you wait, this week, when the form one’s go to school right you will hear new figures about the Free SHS but nobody would talk about quality, we only are talking about quantity for political expediency and for political benefit and advantage”.
“Nobody would be talking about the quality, and parents are going through it, the portals are opened you do self-placement and in two days you are supposed to cough out the money and take your children to school and then everybody is quiet”, he added.
Johnnie Hughes further questioned the kind of assessment that went in that allows students to move to form 2 without their script being marked to see if they passed.
“Today somebody writes an exam before the exam scripts are even marked for them to know that you have passed or failed, they say the person has been promoted to the next class the next day.
What kind of assessment went into it, and then now you are going to bring in form one, and the boarding schools will tell you that when the children come, they spend time cleaning, the current form one who are going to form two in this very last term I am told spend about just three weeks in school”, he said.
Johnnie Hughes further asked the Ghana education service, and the Ministry of Education if this was the best they could have done for children and the learners and their parents.
