The Chief of Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Dwamena Dankwa, has explained the reasons behind his decision to expel Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, from campaigning in his town. The businessman-turned-politician, who is vying for the presidency in the upcoming 2024 elections, was sacked for failing to adhere to traditional customs by not seeking permission from the chief’s palace before holding a political rally.
In a video that has gained attention on social media, the chief expressed his frustration over Cheddar’s actions, emphasizing the importance of respecting the town’s cultural protocols. “Recently, one of the politicians—I am told he’s called Nana Kwame Bediako—came to this town and held a campaign at the lorry station without paying a courtesy call here at the palace. Do you own a town? I drove him out of this town,” Nana Dwamena Dankwa stated.
According to the chief, it is customary for politicians to visit the local chief when they come to a town for campaigning. The tradition allows them to seek the chief’s blessing and permission, ensuring that their activities are respectful of local governance structures. “If you visit my town to campaign and you fail to recognise that there’s a chief here, then you cannot campaign on my land,” the chief further remarked, making it clear that such actions would not be tolerated.
The incident highlights the tension between political ambitions and traditional authority, with the Drobonso chief insisting that no one can disregard the customs of the land and still expect to campaign freely. Cheddar, who is campaigning to become Ghana’s first independent president, now faces the challenge of regaining favor in the region following this public setback.
