Security consultant as expressed grave concerns about Ghana’s efficacy in fighting Galamsey.
He warned that the winner of the upcoming Election 2024 will lack the resolve to tackle the issue effectively.
In a recent media dialogue, Prof. Aning stressed the pervasive corruption and integrity issues plaguing Ghana’s public institutions.
Prof. Aning also proposed that all candidates for public office undergo comprehensive background checks to reveal any connections to institutions or entities threatening Ghana’s well-being.
“Whoever wins the December 7 election does not have the gumption to take this fight to galamsey. If the National Intelligence Bureau is anything to go by, and we said, look, every single person who has put forth himself or herself up for public office, do an analysis and background check in terms of their linkages to institutions, to companies, to groups that are threatening the survival of Ghana, probably less than 20 of those people will survive,” he said.
He also criticized the general acceptance of “gifts” from companies connected to Galamsey. He believes this has severely undermined these institutions’ ability to safeguard the country’s natural resources.
“We can produce all the reports we like and establish all the interlinkages, but as long as we are tainted by collusion and corruption, we lack the integrity and moral authority to enforce meaningful action,” he added.
