The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare has stated that the Ghana Police Service is not against people who want to demonstrate.
Speaking at a Ghana Police discussion on the safety measures and police protocol during December the IGP reacted to issue regarding protest when he was asked.
IGP Dampare stated “there is this misconception, that the police don’t want people to demonstrate, who are we that we can stop anybody from demonstrating? So, from today we want to beg of you let the message be out there we are not against anybody demonstrating”.
The IGP however added that the police have to be informed 5 days to the demonstration and if everything sits well with them in terms of no other persons right being infringe upon they support demonstrators.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 54 protesters charged with conspiracy to commit a crime are currently in remand waiting for their court hearing.
