Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku, has promised the next NDC government when voted to power will resource illegal miners (galamsey operators) to mine responsibly.
She admits there are limited jobs in the country and says the NDC government will not further increase unemployment rates in the country by banning galamsey.
Speaking at a campaign event in Amenfi, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang can be heard saying, “So, we’ve come with good news. Part of the good news is that all of us gathered here today are aware galamsey is practiced here in Amenfi. Or it doesn’t exist? Where are the galamsey people?” a resounding “they are here” resounded from the crowd.
She further added that just like gold was not discovered in Ghana yesterday, so has galamsey being a practice of old.
“So, the good news were are bringing is that just like galamsey is being practiced in some countries yet their water bodies are not destroyed. The NDC will in the same vein educate our people to mine and not destroy water bodies or destroy their lives,” she added.
