Vice Presidential Candidate, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh known by all as NAPO, has revealed his party’s plans to continue the practice of mining in the country.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves while promoting responsible mining practices.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, he emphasized that mining contributes significantly to Ghana’s economy and will continue with strict regulations.
“We will never stop mining. Mining has given the country a lot of benefits. How else will we implement the Gold for oil policy if her stop mining?”he asked.
He indicated that instead of preventing it from being done, they will rather ensure it does not occur in sensitive areas, such as water bodies or forest reserves, addressing concerns over illegal mining’s devastating impact on the country’s natural resources.
He asserted that the NPP government seeks to balance economic benefits with environmental protection, ensuring sustainable mining practices.
NAPO’s comment responds to the ongoing concerns about galamsey, which has severely harmed Ghana’s environment and water bodies.
This stance, also aligns with President Akufo-Addo’s previous assurances, emphasizing “clean mining” and responsible practices to safeguard Ghana’s environment for future generations.
