Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Lawyer Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has publicly challenged his former lecturer, Lawyer Martin Kpebu, during a live discussion on TV3’s “Key Points” program regarding the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to declare four seats vacant.
During the TV3 debate, Lawyer Vincent Ekow Assafuah questioned Lawyer Kpebu’s ability to comprehend the Supreme Court’s ruling, which halted Speaker Bagbin’s declaration.
In response, Martin Kpebu humorously remarked: “Arrh, Asefua! But I taught you law, and now you’re trying to re-teach me? If I was that bad, I’m not sure you would’ve passed!”
This comes after the Supreme Court, earlier today, directed Speaker Alban Bagbin to suspend his decision, which declared the four parliamentary seats vacant.
Parliament was ordered to recognize and allow the four Members of Parliament to fully represent their constituencies and carry out their official duties.
The application to stay the Speaker’s decision was filed by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, seeking the Court’s intervention to halt the enforcement of the ruling that would have affected three of their colleagues and one from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The application was filed ex parte, meaning that neither Speaker Bagbin nor Parliament was joined to the case, allowing the Court to consider the NPP MPs’ request without the participation or response of the Speaker or parliamentary authorities at this stage.
Meanwhile, the Effutu MP cautioned the NPP MPs not to lose focus, as the opposition party (NDC) is doing everything in its power to frustrate the NPP’s bid for the 2024 elections.
