A video of Mamprusi residents being escorted out of Bawku by heavy security has surfaced.
Following the renewed chieftaincy dispute in Bawku, which has led to the loss of over 20 lives, some Mamprusi residents of Bawku were reportedly escorted out of the area by heavy security forces earlier today for their safety.
In the viral video, the security in Bawku was seen escorting several buses at least six loaded with people from Bawku town which is an indication of evacuation from the conflict area.
The Ghana Commercial Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, CBG, SSNIT, GRA, Ghana Water Company, court, and more Government institutions have all evacuated the area.
One more person was killed in Bawku on Saturday and his car burnt to ashes on November 2, 2024, with the death toll of the Bawku conflict now standing at 21.
There has been an escalation of violence following the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Abagre fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, allowing him to resurface.
The government has imposed a curfew in Bawku to address the unrest, effective October 28, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily.
