The Upper East Regional Peace Council is urging all parties involved in the Bawku conflict to refrain from violence and prioritize peace in the area.
The long-standing conflict was reignited last weekend by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile and an ambush on travelers, resulting in at least fifteen deaths and several injuries.
In response to the situation, the Ghana Police Service has assured of increased security presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway whilst government has imposed a dust to dawn curfew in Bawku as relative calm returns to the area.
The youth in the area however took to some streets burning tyres demanding that the curfew be extended to other parts of the Region. Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Stephen Asamaoh Boateng at a media briefing this morning called for calm and de-politicization of the Bawku conflict.
In a statement this afternoon Chairman of the Upper East Regional Peace Council, Alhaji Sumaila Issaka emphasized the need for stability in Bawku, calling on security services to be proactive in ensuring the safety of all residents and travelers along the Bolgatanga-Tamale Highway.
