Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a cousin to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has criticized the “devilish” reactions of some individuals to the health status of Nana Bediatuo Asante, Executive Secretary to the President who is also his cousin.
Gabby expressed concern over the disappointment voiced by certain sections of the public following confirmation that Nana Bediatuo Asante is responding well to treatment after recent rumors of his death. He condemned the reactions, stating that wishing for another person’s death and being disappointed that they are alive is “devilishly debased.”
“The hatred is deep and scary. To wish a fellow human being dead and be disappointed he is still alive is devilishly debased. Anger, says Aristotle, can be cured by time; but hatred cannot,” Gabby stated in a Facebook post.
The comments came after the Office of the President issued a statement announcing that Nana Bediatuo Asante is currently in stable condition and responding positively to treatment after being hospitalized in the United States. This news followed widespread false rumors about his death after his recent participation in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Meanwhile, the public reaction to Nana Bediatuo’s health prompted a comment from Malik Bansintale, Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). He argued that the public’s sentiments towards the president’s secretary reflect the general discontent with President Akufo-Addo’s family.
“Sir, I hope you now get a sense of how Ghanaians feel about your ‘Mafia’ Family. I mean the Dankwa, Kuntunkununku, and Ofori Panyin Family,” Bansintale wrote in response to Gabby’s post. “Well, we don’t wish you all dead. We wish you all jailed and the stolen monies returned!”
