Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has firmly stated that those who have threatened not to relinquish power after the December 2024 elections will have no option but to do so, as mandated by the Constitution. His comments underscore the necessity of upholding the people’s will as expressed through the electoral process.
Speaking during a media engagement in Tamale on Friday, Speaker Bagbin emphasized that the Constitution clearly defines the process for transferring power, and any refusal to comply with the outcome of the elections would be unconstitutional.
“Those who make utterances that they won’t hand over power will have no choice but to do so because the Constitution says so, and the power is with the people,” Bagbin stated, addressing concerns raised by various groups and individuals about the possibility of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) not conceding power should the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) win the 2024 presidential election.
The Speaker’s remarks follow statements made by President Akufo-Addo and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, who were reportedly captured on various platforms expressing reluctance to hand over power if the NDC emerges victorious in the upcoming elections.
Bagbin also reaffirmed Parliament’s unwavering commitment to a peaceful electoral process, assuring the public that the integrity of Ghana’s democracy would be preserved.
In response to Speaker Bagbin’s remarks, the Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, commended him for his dedication to press freedom and his continued support for journalists across the country.
