President Akufo-Addo has failed to win the fight against illegal mining activities because of the fear of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not realizing the ‘Break the 8’ campaign, ace broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi.
According to him, regardless of the evident destructive effects of illegal mining in Ghana, the president is haunted by reliving the party’s near loss in the 2020 general elections, hence his seemingly lackadaisical attitude towards the fight against illegal mining.
During his show on Peace FM, the broadcaster revealed, “even though he (President Akufo-Addo) does have power to cause arrest of galamseyers, the 2020 elections may have frightened him. At the end of the day, everyone is seeking victory for his political party.”
Although Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has taken decisive action in the fight against galamsey and has displayed his commitment against the illegality by destooling chiefs in his jurisdiction, President Akufo-Addo has acted otherwise, clearing appointees who have been cited as being complicity in galamsey.
“The president is claiming not to have heard it? Multimedia’s Erastus Asare Donkor has dedicated his life to covering illicit mining and the devastation it causes to our ecosystem, to the point where he was awarded journalist of the year,” he fumed.
He queried the president’s ability to utilize state investigative bodies to root out persons involved in galamsey when individuals and other bodies are using the same investigative bodies to achieve positive results in the fight.
