BMW is a German acronym for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates to Bavarian Motor Works in English.
BMW was founded in 1916 in Munich, Germany and was initially specialized in producing aircraft engines. The brand ventured into the production of motorcycles in the 1920s and eventually automobiles in the 1930s.
