The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on Ghanaians to consider gifting essential fire safety items such as smoke alarms and fire extinguishers this festive season, instead of the usual fowls, goats, and sheep.
According to the Head of Public Relations at GNFS, Divisional Officer II Desmond E. Ackah, these simple yet vital gifts can help prevent fire-related disasters and save lives, especially in the wake of recent incidents.
His appeal comes shortly after a major fire outbreak at Circle Odawna in Accra, which destroyed over 15 structures.
Fortunately, the fire service’s swift response contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to a nearby warehouse and threatening over 200 other buildings in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started near the site of a previous blaze, which had damaged several wooden structures, raising ongoing concerns about fire safety in the area.
In light of these incidents, Ackah emphasized the importance of prioritizing fire safety in homes and communities, urging the public to take preventive measures during the festive season.
