Member of Parliament (MP) representing the South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has shared footages of thieves removing railway lines in Achimota Kwashibum for scraps.
According to the MP who lives in New-Achimota, the unidentified men have been ”ransacking the existing railway lines and carting away the metals as scrap.”
He disclosed that the crime is being perpetrated in broad day light near a police station and no action is being taken against it.
Railway theft is no new phenomenon in Ghana. Most often than not, railway lines which have been out of use for long periods of time tend to be removed and stolen by some unscrupulous people to be sold as scrap or used for their own purposes.
These thefts have impeded government efforts in improving the nations railway infrastructure, causing the nation millions of cedis to re-lay railway lines regularly.
When I posted evidence of how a major railway line in this country was being ransacked yesterday, some Npp supporters asked why I didn’t go to the police. Why must I waste time to report to the Police with this when apparently it’s being done right near a Police station. How does… pic.twitter.com/vd4GGnM6XD
