Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in vote-buying tactics across the country ahead of the 2024 elections.

Speaking during a campaign tour Mahama alleged that the ruling party is distributing items such as salt, Maggi cubes, buckets, and even small sums of money to entice voters. He urged Ghanaians to accept these items but warned them not to allow their votes to be influenced by such tactics.

“They have stolen a lot of money, and during the election period, they have taken a paltry sum, and they are using it to buy votes.

I went to Bodi, and the people told me they brought them bentua [enema syringe].

But I ask, if you are hungry, how can you insert medicine through the anus to help cleanse the system?” Mahama stated, drawing laughter and shock from his audience.

Mahama emphasized that the items being distributed by the NPP are purchased with public funds, essentially returning a fraction of what has been taken from Ghanaians.

“Anything they bring to you, take it because it is your money they are using.

However, don’t sell your conscience to these people.

You are not a commodity,” he said, urging citizens to reject what he described as a short-sighted trade-off.

The former president also questioned the practicality of the items being distributed, particularly the bentua in Bodi.

“People may think it is a joke, but that is what the people of Bodi said they brought to them. If you are hungry, is that what will solve your problems?” he asked rhetorically.

He appealed to Ghanaians to prioritize the future of the country over immediate gains, reminding them of the long-term impact of their decisions at the polls.
