Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu aka Joe Wise, has called for the shooting and killing of individuals found at illegal mining (galamsey) sites.
According to Joe Wise, the government has put in place many strategies to fight the menace but it is still prevailing.
The challenge lies in arresting these illegal miners, as they often evade capture by diving into rivers and swimming away. In light of this, Joe Wise suggests training snipers to shoot illegal miners on sight, believing this will deter others from engaging in such activities.
“I comprehend that a prospecting license allows for digging a small area, approximately one square foot, but these individuals are excavating vast areas of up to 100 meters square without a valid mining license. What are the consequences of shooting someone engaging in such illegal mining activities?”, he questioned.
“If you are found mining on water bodies, you should be shot. When you go to Dunkwa, you will see about 15 galamseyers operating a chanfang on the river. Immediately the car (taskforce) parks, they (illegal miners) all dive into the water. So we came to a conclusion that such people will always evade capture. The best way to deal with that person is to get a sniper to shoot them. If this happens, they will not do that again,” he added.
He declared illegal miners on water bodies and wicked people, adding they deserve to die.
Joe Wise has previously emphasized the need for stronger mining regulations, pointing out that illegal miners don’t pay taxes and harm the environment.
He advocates for responsible mining practices, ensuring that the government receives revenue from mining activities.
First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei Owusu has reaffirmed his statement that illegal miners, especially those mining on water bodies, should be shòt and k!lled.
