The Judicial Service of Ghana has filed a lawsuit against the government, alleging the unlawful sale of its properties.
The court action, revealed in a viral court document, has sparked a dramatic reaction from North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Nana Akomea, Deputy Chairman of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s NPP campaign team, during a live discussion on TV.
On September 6, 2024, Ablakwa read from the court document, detailing the lawsuit against the Land Commission, Frims Oil Company Limited, and the Attorney General. The Judicial Service is challenging the legality of the sale of several key properties, including bungalows previously occupied by high-ranking judicial officials.
The revelation took host by surprise, prompting her to exclaim, “The plaintiff is the Judicial Service of Ghana!” Ablakwa’s reaction was a mix of disbelief and amusement, leading him to comment, “Judicial Service of Ghana, they have gone to court. That is the republic that we are in now,” which elicited laughter from the panel and the host.
Nana Akomea, initially perplexed, soon joined in the laughter, remarking, “Annie, I don’t know why but it has occurred to me that this is the judicial service, which is the court.” His comments, combined with Ablakwa’s quip, “The court has gone to court,” provided a comedic twist to the serious legal matter at hand.
The Judicial Service’s lawsuit aims to invalidate the sale of several properties, including:
