The member of parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George has revealed that the Chief Justice of Ghana Gertrude Torkonoo is supporting Akufo-Addo to support LGBTQ in the country.
According to Sam George, the Chief Justice wrote a letter to the multimedia group, and he was copied in it saying the case before the Supreme Court on LGBTQ has not been fully heard so she cannot pass judgment.
Speaking on TV3 Key Point, Sam George stated, “The Chief Justice intentionally has not ruled, so it is not true that in the LGBTQ case the injunction has not been heard, all arguments have been made, and all depositions have been completed all that is left is a declaration by the Supreme Court, she is failing to do that, she is supporting President Akufo-Addo to support LGBTQ”.
Sam George further added, “And I am saying that the Chief Justice is lying when the Chief Justice says the case before the Supreme Court on the LGBTQ has not been fully heard and so she cannot pass judgment, on the injunction case which is the reason why parliament cannot transmit that has been fully heard”.
“The Chief Justice on her own decided that even though the injunction case had been heard fully she was to hear the substantive case before he would rule on the injunction effectively placing an injunction on parliament without saying so and that is the reason why today the Clark has held until the speaker recent declaration that he should resend it.
The LGBTQ bill has been a subject of controversy, with proponents arguing it’s essential to protect traditional family values, while opponents claim it infringes on human rights.
The bill was passed by the Parliament of Ghana on February 28, 2024, but its fate hangs in the balance as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo awaits the outcome of two Supreme Court cases challenging its constitutionality
