Ghana’s power situation may worsen in the coming days as Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited, an independent power producer, has suspended operations at its 560Megawats power plant.
In a press statement the company cited the inability to fund operations due to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s failure to meet its overdue payment obligations as the primary reason.
Sunon Asogli express regret over the shutdown emphasizing that it has always been considerate in its dealings with ECG and the government.
Despite this ECG’s outstanding debt to Sunon Asogli has reached a staggering 259million dollars excluding fuel cost as of the end of September 2024.
The company also reported a significant increase in its debt with the 23% rise in the net balance between January and September 2024, additionally only 22.6% of the invoices for this period have been settled by ECG through the cash waterfall mechanism.
The suspension of the power plant is expected to have wide implications for electricity supply in the country raising concerns about potential power outages.
