Titus Sabwami, a retired teacher, recently uncovered a shocking scheme in which his identity was stolen, and his death faked, all in an attempt to siphon off his pension savings.
Sabwami discovered that two individuals, Emmanuel Nali Kakai and Franklin Kakai, orchestrated the fraudulent plot. Emmanuel, posing as Sabwami’s son, and Franklin, an unemployed lawyer, accessed KSh 7 million($444,000) from his pension fund. The perpetrators used forged documents, including a falsified death certificate and burial permit, to claim Sabwami had passed away.
Despite Sabwami reporting the matter, he expressed frustration at the lack of response from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). He also revealed that one of the perpetrators, Emmanuel, is a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), complicating the legal process.
This case has raised concerns about the security of pension schemes and the institutions responsible for protecting retirees from fraud and identity theft. Sabwami continues to seek justice as the investigation into the case unfolds.
