Smallholder farmers in Birim North district have lamented bitterly of the impact of galamsey on their farmlands and crops.
Speaking to TV3 Newday a farmer shared her plight while struggling to hold her tears during the interview, the woman said, “I have BP, what I am asking is that all the work I have done, it has been destroyed with me getting nothing to look after my child I want people to help me”.
One of the farmers noted that galamseyers have destroyed the Pra River which cannot be used to irrigate their farm produce made up of garden eggs, okro, tomatoes and pepper. She added that anytime they fetch water from River Pra to irrigate their crops the crops dry up and perish.
Farmers in the area also detailed that Palm trees in the area are not yielding to their maximum capacity due to galamseyers and the lack of rains in the area.
The destruction by these galamseyers is not just felt on their farmlands, but also their children are being affected too with many dropping out of school leading to a rise in teenage pregnancy cases in the district.
The resident urged the government to fulfil their responsibility to the people of Birim North district by seeing to it that all farmlands destruction comes to an end.
