Economic Advisor and Spokesperson for the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Brako suffered immense criticism and backlash following a Facebook post he made.
The post which has yet been deleted was targeted at Ghanaians protesting against illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.
His post attempted to rubbish the efforts of these anti-galamsey crusaders but has received the wrath of Ghanaians.
There have been a series of protests in Ghana’s capital against galamsey and its effects on the environment. The first protests organized by Democracy Hub, spanned for 3-day (September 21st – 22nd, 2024), and resulted in the arrest of 54 protestors on various grounds, ranging from public disturbance to destruction of property.
Currently, there is an ongoing demonstration, dubbed #FreeTheCitizens, also targeted at drawing attention to galamsey and demanding for the release of the 54 jailed Democracy Hub demonstrators.
In the post, Dr. Gideon Brako ending with #EqualAttention said, “Hypocrisy is when we gloss over polluted Odaw River and Korle Lagoon in Accra but demonstrate over a polluted Pra or Tano river outside Accra.”
His post although deleted has resurfaced, with Ghanaians taking out their anger on him.
