Editor of the Fourth Estate, Manasseh Azuri Awuni has revealed one of President Akufo-Addo’s biggest regrets was the appointment of Professor Michael Aaron Oquaye as Ghana’s Speaker.
According to him, Professor Michael Aaron Oquaye was not the first choice of Akufo-Addo’s for Speaker of Parliament.
Manasseh disclosed that the preferred candidate of Akufo-Addo was a Supreme Court Judge whose name he withheld.
He mentioned Martin Amidu as one of the key persons behind Professor Michael Aaron Oquaye’s appointment.
“The judge asked for an official letter based on which to resign from the Supreme Court. While he waited, pressure mounted on Akufo-Addo to stick with Prof. Michael Aaron Oquaye as the Speaker of Parliament. Part of the argument for Mike Oquaye was due to Martin Amidu. (The full details are in “The President Ghana Never Got”).
President Akufo-Addo retained Mike Oquaye, a decision a source close to him told me remains one of Akufo-Addo’s biggest political regrets,” his post on X read.
The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, told me in a recorded interview for my book that a Supreme Court judge called him after NPP won the 2020 election. He declined to name the Supreme Court judge, but other sources named him, and I confirmed.
