The Awoshie branch of the Presbyterian Church has joined the campaign against irresponsible and illegal mining practices that are causing significant environmental destruction.
The church is deeply concerned about the existential threats these activities pose to the country and is urging the government to take immediate action to address the issue.
With the theme, “40 years with a faithful God,” the church reflected on its journey, while asking God to continually guide the church.
Speaking to Metro News, the minister in charge of the church, Reverend Beatrice Ansah Kwakye, said the church is much concerned about the massive degradation of water bodies, forests and pollution of the air by illegal miners popularly known as galamsey.
‘when something goes wrong, it will affect the church. So we also want to plead with the illegal miners that they should put a stop to it because our water bodies are being destroyed and it is causing a lot of diseases to the inhabitants of the country. So they should do well to stop the illegal mining so that we will have water bodies clean’’.
With the health dangers associated with illegal mining posing a significant threat to the existence of humans, the reverend minister while calling on the state to take immediate action also admonished illegal miners to voluntarily halt their operations in order to save the environment.
Meanwhile, she has also called on political actors and all Ghanaians to ensure that this year’s elections become peaceful.
