A police commander of the Ghana Police Service has said politicians, Chiefs, and security agencies are undermining the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
Speaking at an engagement with some residents the Police Commander accused some Chiefs, Politicians, and Security agencies of being complicit in the illegal mining menace.
The Police commander said, “A couple of times arrests have been made, and severally arrests have been made, while you are preparing your docket some calls will come left, right, center, top, and down, and before you realize there is an order for you to go on a different tangent and it is not easy”.
“Couple of times arrest will be made and someone will come and bump into you with a mobile phone, when you listen they will say I am the party Chairman of ‘soso’ and so party, and the person will threaten you, that is not to say that will deter us but it will certainly have an influence on whether to go left or right”, he added.
He further expressed his frustration with the delay in prosecuting offenders by the Attorney General, “the State is telling the Police you can go and effect arrest, you can investigate to some extent but before you proceed to court seek the concerns of the Attorney General. Sometimes the Attorney General will even take over the prosecution of the case and so most of the cases in which we have effected an arrest docket have been prepared but are currently pending determination at the office of the attorney general”.
