Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has appealed to workers to refrain from going on strike while encouraging them to wear red bands as a symbol of solidarity against the devastating effects of illegal mining on communities.
She emphasized that the agency’s operations are critical to national security, especially in providing weather data essential for sectors such as aviation, agriculture, and emergency services.
Her appeal comes just hours before the nationwide strike, scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Organised Labour, along with its allied unions, initiated the strike to pressure the government into taking decisive action against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”
The strike is part of a broader call for the government to declare a state of emergency and implement measures to halt the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, which has led to widespread pollution of water bodies and forest reserves across the country.
