The Galilea JHS school in the Ga South Municipality has met its untimely deadlock as over 500 students and Teachers have been stranded as Contractor locks classrooms over unpaid debt by the Ghana Educational Trust Fund.
The incidence which inconvenienced the learners and their facilitators happened on Friday November 22, 2024 as students were captured gallivanting up and down on the compound of the school due to their inability to access their classroom
In an interview with the media, the contractor explained that, the project which was awarded to him began in 2017 and was completed in 2018. He shared that, after the completion of the project, no communication has been made from the government to them in terms of the payment. He said several calls have been made from their camp to the government and authority responsible for their payment but to no avail.
He also shared that, this becomes the second time they have decided to lock the classrooms over the same unpaid debt. He mentioned that, they initially locked the classrooms in early October but were promised their money within two weeks. It’s been over two weeks and nothing have been heard or communicated to them by GETFund, according to the contractor.
He further threatened to deal with any individual being it a teacher or a student who tries to break into the classrooms in an attempt to learn. He also shared that, this second closure of the classrooms will remain so and be monitored by them until all debts owed them for the past four years is cleared according to the current price equivalent of a cement bag.
