The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra on Friday embarked on an “Environmental Prayer Walk” as part of the campaign against illegal mining (galamsey).
The walk which started with a “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral at Adabraka saw members of the Catholic church turning up in their numbers to support the fight against galamsey.
Also, environmental activists, and members of the public, joined the walk, drawing attention to the devastating effects caused by galamsey to the nation’s water bodies and forests.
At the walk, the Catholics carried a number of placards with one of the most prominent reading “Our God is a GREEN God. Repent and protect the environment.”
The fight against illegal mining has united Ghanaians as in the last few months, there have been numerous demonstrations calling on government to place a ban on mining as part of efforts to curb the damage it is having on the nation’s resources.
